What is VG/PG Ratio? Vegetable Glycerin vs Propylene Glycol

You wonder what VG/PG ratios are and why there are options when you are browsing our e-liquids. In fact, “What is VG/PG?” is one of the questions asked the most. Find out what Vegetable Glycerin and Propylene Glycol is and what VG/PG Ratio is best for you in this blog!

What is VG/PG?

What is Vegetable Glycerin (VG)?

VG stands for Vegetable Glycerine. VG is thick in viscosity, thicker than PG is.  Pure 100% VG is what produces the full and thick clouds you see in vape competitions and vape trick videos. VG will reduce the amount of flavor that you taste at higher percentages but will also make your hit more smooth.

Vegetable Glycerin (or glycerol) is clear. You can find it as an additive in food, like cookies and dairy. VG comes from plant oils, mostly palm or soy, sometimes coconut oils. By itself, VG is odorless, though you do get a faint sweetness.

What is Propylene Glycol (PG)?

Propylene Glycol (PG) is thin in viscosity and is a carrier  of vape flavor concentrates. Propylene Glycol gives you the extra flavor you love in most e-liquids! Like VG, there is a trade-off here. You get more taste with higher PG percentage, while you sacrifice vapor production. It also causes the e-liquid to be “throatier” which is to say that it has a bigger throat hit, similar to a analog cigarette. VG makes the vape smooth, where PG makes it a harder hit when you vape.

Propylene Glycol (pharmaceutical grade) is found in a lot of consumable product, like soda and salad dressing. PG is a synthetic compound that has been thoroughly tested by the FDA and CDC, and is approved for many different uses!

What VG/PG Ratio should I choose?

There are many different ratio's of VG and PG out there. It's best to start in the middle ground at 65%VG & 35% PG so you get the best of both worlds. This is the typical ratio found in other brands you are familiar with around the industry. It is the perfect medium of clouds and flavor, without the overpowering throat hit, nor the lack of taste found with higher PG and VG respectively. Adjust from 65/35 or even grab yourself a 10ml of each ratio to find which is right for you!

VG vs PG for Vape Juice

  • Max VG: 80/20 VG/PG Ratio
  • Max VG is ideal for the vaper that builds on a rebuildable deck. Drippers (RDAs) and  Rebuildable Tank Atomizers (RTAs). When you have 80% VG in your e-liquid, it will wick (or soak) into your cotton a bit slower. Avoid Max VG when you are vaping in a tank that uses pre-made coils like Freemax or UWELL Crown tanks because it may give you dry hits and lead to shorter coil life. If you are a builder, you would probably enjoy Max VG because you came for clouds!

  • 65/35 VG/PG Ratio
  • The newer vaper’s dream! The A-typical blend in vape juice around the industry gives you both a dense cloud and great flavor. For the Sub-Ohm vaper, builder and pre-made coil users alike, 65/35 gives each vaper the full vaping experience! This ratio also works really well when it comes to coil life.

  • 50/50 VG/PG Ratio
  • Vapers using  MTL (Mouth to Lung) tanks or pods lean toward 50/50 VG/PG ratios because of their great taste! This ratio gives you a punch of flavor and newer vapers that are transitioning from smoking love 50/50 for the throat hit. Because higher nicotine levels add to the throat hit, you will benefit from lowering the nicotine content in favor of 50/50 VG/PG so you are taking in less nic, but still get the hit. Use primarily with high ohm tanks like the Aspire Triton and pod systems like the Suorin Vagon to enjoy the most flavor!
